IDF denies killing Palestinian Islamic Jihad members in Gaza blast

Reports from Gaza's Hamas-controlled Health Ministry said Tuesday that two Palestinians were killed in what was described as an assassination by an Israeli military drone.

Diggers are seen near the area where the Israeli forces said a "significant" cross-border attack tunnel from the Gaza Strip, which was being dug by the enclave's dominant Islamist group, Hamas, was destroyed, near Israel's border with the Gaza Strip December 10, 2017.

The announcement, cleared by Israeli censors who had previously barred reports of detection work around the central Gaza frontier, followed a surge of Palestinian unrest in response to last week's USA recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Residents also report hearing IDF artillery shelling the Beit Hanoun area of Gaza in response. A second rocket that was sacked was intercepted by the Iron Dome.

Hamas' military wing issued a statement earlier Sunday threatening Israel with a "heavy price".

Speaking shortly after it was cleared for publication that the IDF had uncovered a cross-border terror tunnel near the Gaza Strip border, GOC Southern Command Maj. The rocket was successfully intercepted by an Iron Dome battery.

Several rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza over the weekend, including one that hit near a home in the city of Sderot and another one that damaged a kindergarten.

In retaliation, Israel targeted a number of Hamas positions, killing two Hamas terrorists.

The tunnel, which stretched a few hundred meters into southern Israel, was identified several weeks ago using "unique tools combined with advanced technology, intelligence and operational capabilities", Manelis said.

Hours after two rockets that were fired by Palestinians landed near Israel's border with Gaza on Monday night, a rocket siren was sounded in the Hof Ashkelon and Lakhish regional councils.
