IDF Issues Warning After Gaza Rocket Fire Strikes Israeli Kindergarten

A high-ranking Israeli general warned Saturday that additional rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip toward Israel would be met with a "severe and painful response". The IDF is making clear this evening (Sunday) that it chose to destroy the tunnel without blowing it up in order to reduce any potential reactions from the terrorist organization.

He declined to specify the exact location in Israeli territory and an exit point had not yet been created for the tunnel.

Shortly afterwards, the army said it had identified a second launch from the Hamas-controlled enclave, but had not yet identified where it landed. It added that Hamas is the authority governing the Gaza Strip and as such is responsible for everything happening there.

Hamas did not respond to a CNN request for comment on Israel's claim.

This was the second tunnel destroyed using a new system to detect, expose and destroy tunnels in the past six weeks.

"We have achieved new technological capabilities in the fight against tunnel terror", Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement after the tunnel's destruction was announced.

As well as tunnels under the border with Israel, there are also tunnels that run underneath Gaza's border with Egypt, which are used to smuggle in food and other supplies, as well as weapons.

During the 2014 summer war with Israel, Hamas terrorists on several occasions made their way into Israel through terror tunnels, although they did not manage to reach civilian areas.
