Whistleblower: Flynn told ex-partner Russian Federation sanctions would be ripped up

Whistleblower: Flynn told ex-partner Russian Federation sanctions would be ripped up

As President Trump delivered his inaugural address, national security adviser Michael Flynn texted a former business partner that a private nuclear power project that would require lifting sanctions on Russian Federation was "good to go", a senior House Democrat said in a letter released Wednesday.

The whistleblower also said that within minutes of Trump's inauguration ceremony, Flynn communicated directly with business associates about plans to begin building nuclear reactors in the Middle East-a joint project with Russian Federation, according to the letter.

It is alleged that while sitting a few yards away from the podium where President Trump was delivering his inaugural address on 20 January, Mr Flynn sent the texts to Alex Copson, managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners, a U.S. nuclear power consultancy.

The account is from a whistleblower made public for the first time today. Given the seriousness of the charge and the person making it, if the committee isn't going to issue a subpoena, Robert Mueller nearly certainly will.

He also said he finds the whistle-blower to be "authentic, credible and reliable", and someone who has come forward even though he fears retaliation because "he feels duty bound as a citizen to make this disclosure".

"Mike has been putting everything in place for us", Copson said, according to the whistleblower. He also lied when he said he did not recall a follow-up conversation with the ambassador, who said that "Russia had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of Flynn's request".

Flynn's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment on the latest claims.

"I do not bring this whistle-blower to your attention lightly", Mr. Cummings said.

The whistle-blower told Mr Cummings that he saw a text from Flynn that was sent on Jan 20 "approximately ten minutes" into Mr Trump's speech when Flynn was sitting in the audience.

The whistle-blower contacted Cummings' office in June, and gave the congressman permission to share his account as part of the committee's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

So what we have is a second-hand account of text messages allegedly sent by Michael Flynn. But the whistleblower says he or she could not read the actual message. Copson was working at the time with Flynn on a project to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East, and Flynn reported in August that he served as an "advisor" to Copson's company between 2015-2016. But he asked Gowdy to issue a subpoena to the White House for documents related to Flynn, saying that the committee has "credible allegations" that Flynn "sought to manipulate the course of global nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".

ACU Strategic Partners has declined comment or make Mr Copson available for an interview.

The Maryland Democrat said he considered "credible" the allegations that Flynn "sought to manipulate the course of worldwide nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".
