Sensex leaps to biggest single-day gain in a month

PSU Bank stocks too recovered from the previous session's losses, and Nifty PSU bank index ended 1.25 per cent higher at 3,798.55.

Mumbai: The benchmark BSE Sensex fell over 108 points in opening trade following a cautious stance adopted by participants ahead of the RBI policy review amid weak Asian cues. It finally ended at 32,949.21, up 352.03 points, or 1.08 per cent - its biggest single-day gain since November 1, when it had surged 387.14 points.

The index had lost 205 points yesterday after the Reserve Bank held the policy rate and raised the inflation forecast for the remainder of the fiscal.

The BSE Sensex settled 67.28 points, or 0.20 per cent, down at 32,802.44, while NSE Nifty index closed 9.50 points, or 0.09 per cent, down at 10,118.25.

Sharp fall in global oil prices on Wednesday also boosted investor sentiment.

According to market observers, robust buying in auto, consumer durables and capital goods stocks lifted the benchmark indices.

Market breadth was positive with 1,614 advances against 542 declines.

Bharti Airtel secured podium finish among the Sensex constituents, ratcheting up 6.08 per cent.

Defying the bullish spirit were index heavyweights such as TCS (down 0.52 per cent), Coal India (down 0.64 per cent), Cipla (down 0.50 per cent), Sun Pharma (down 0.26 per cent) and Wipro (down 0.34 per cent). Among the Asian bourses, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1.12 per cent while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.90 per cent. London's FTSE too was up 0.24 per cent.
