Shiver me timbers: Arctic blast on the way

Shiver me timbers: Arctic blast on the way

We'll see a spell of wet weather for western Britain and Northern Ireland with strong, gusty winds across the United Kingdom, even gales in places midweek.

Accompanying the colder temperatures will be a coastal low pressure system that forecasters say could cause light showers Friday morning.

Rain and thunderstorms from this cold front will taper off from west to east this evening as the Arctic air moves in behind the front.

Temperatures will fall dramatically throughout the day Wednesday, leading to several cold days.

Wednesday: Partly sunny with a high near 33 degrees and a low of 25 degrees.

Beginning Tuesday and continuing through the foreseeable future, highs are going to remain in the 40s, with lows in the low- to mid-20s. I'm still expecting sweater weather in the morning but it won't be almost as chilly as previous mornings.

Friday morning starts off with lingering cold rain showers along the coast and a slight risk of rain in the Pee Dee, a cold rain/winter mix in NC.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a high near 33 degrees. In most cases, the higher up a hill or mountain you go, the colder it gets - roughly by 1C for each 100 metres.

Temperatures are set to drop to -4c in areas with heavy frost and snowfall expected.

All day long our temperatures will be dropping! We're certainly looking at a more interesting pattern, which is often the case in December, and we will have lots to talk about in my forecast tonight. We will have a thin line of heavier rain, with some embedded thunder marching across the area by the afternoon.

While you're here. Why not watch the latest JOE Show with stars of Irish comedy Nowhere Fast Alison Spittle and Clare Monnelly!

But things will begin to get more interesting - and challenging for forecasters - on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
