IOC suspends Russian Olympic committee

According to the IOC, Russia's Olympic team won't be able to attend the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea this coming February, nor will their flag or anthem be on display or played during the opening ceremony.

The country may just boycott the games altogether, however.

Vitaly Mutko, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation and former Minister of Sport, has been barred from attending any future Olympic Games.

The commission said that evidence in the McLaren report showed "failure to respect the WADA Code within the various entities under the responsibility of the Russian Ministry of Sport".

Ultimately, the IOC's acceptance of the evidence that Russian had run the system led it to a different decision than it reached a year ago when it sought to balance collective responsibility with individual justice.

As we learned in the making of our documentary Icarus, the Russian state ran a vast, state-sponsored doping system that made a mockery of the Olympic ideals of brotherhood and fair play.

In a statement released after it met in Lausanne, Switzerland, the committee said it had acted upon the recommendations of an IOC commission headed by the former Swiss President Samuel Schmid to investigate Russian doping.

In Rio, Russia was allowed to field a team that was one-third the normal size, with the IAAF refusing to allow any Russians to compete.

Ahead of the anti-doping agencies of 17 countries, including the United States, had demanded the International Olympic Committee impose a blanket ban, issuing a collective statement in September that it was time for the body to stop "paying lip-service" to the anti-doping fight.

The decision stems from an ongoing investigation into state-sponsored Russian doping during the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

It said this confirmed the "unprecedented nature of the cheating scheme and, as a effect, the exceptional damage to the integrity of the IOC, the Olympic Games and the entire Olympic Movement".

"They will compete with a uniform bearing this name and under the Olympic Flag", the IOC said. Athletes in other Summer Olympic sports could compete only if certified by their respective global federations.

The IOC executive board chose to suspend the ROC with immediate effect. By Monday, 25 Russians had been disqualified from the Sochi Games and banned from the Olympics for life, and 11 medals were stripped. The American team now leads the way with the 28 medals it won in 2014, with Norway second - and that's without the redistribution of medals that were taken away from Russian athletes.
