ASU's Edwards fired up at introductory press conference

Edwards, who for the past nine years served as an ESPN NFL analyst, was introduced as the Sun Devils' head coach Monday, ushering in an era that will be scrutinized as a result of the unorthodox direction ASU vice president of athletics Ray Anderson chose to go.

In the end, it doesn't matter as long as his Sun Devils " win...the game" and make some noise in the Pac-12.

The wording here, however, is unique, as Arizona State states "the department's New Leadership Model will be similar to an National Football League approach using a general manager structure".

Oh, also: Herm Edwards is the new coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils. We have no idea if this will work out. "In the spirit of innovation, our vision for this program is to have a head coach who serves as a CEO and is the central leader with a collaborative staff around him that will elevate the performance of players and coaches on the field, in the classroom and in our community". Edwards hasn't coached since his dismissal in Kansas City, and he is now an National Football League analyst with ESPN. Edwards was known for his colorful ways when he coached the Chiefs, and that was the case Monday.

The announcement, released on ASU's athletics website, comes after reports last week said Edwards would accept the position.

Only Edwards knows that answer, but it is fun to believe he isn't sure what team he's coaching.

This will mark Edwards' second go-around at the collegiate level, but his first as a head coach. He was 39-41 with the Jets, who reached the playoffs three times in his tenure.

Edwards went just 15-33 in three seasons at the Chiefs helm before being fired after the 2008 season. He previously served as a defensive backs coach for San Jose State from 1987 through 1989.

"It's a collaborative approach to managing the ASU football program that includes sport and administrative divisions, which will operate as distinct, but collective units focused on elevating all aspects of Sun Devil Football", the release said.

"I think a lot of coaches when they get these jobs, they become dominated in that I have to do everything", Edwards said.
