Mueller Removed Top FBI Agent Over Possible Anti-Trump Texts

"I am concerned, however, that our chairman is willing to use the subpoena and contempt power of the House, not to determine how the Russians interfered in our election or whether the president obstructed Justice, but only to distract from the core of our investigation", Schiff said.

Peter Strzok, as deputy head of counter-intelligence at the FBI, was a key player in the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server to do government work as Secretary of State, as well as the probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election.

Lisa Page, an FBI lawyer who was assigned to the Mueller investigation, received the messages.

The office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, pictured here on June 21, removed investigator Peter Strzok over allegations about text messages he exchanged.

Agent Peter Strzok is considered one of the most experienced investigators in the FBI and previously assisted with the Hillary Clinton email investigation, before moving on to investigate Russia's interference in the election. Multiple outlets report he's now working in human resources.

"Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the special counsel's office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation", said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel's office, as quoted by the Times. But in August, news outlets reported that he was no longer involved in the special counsel effort.

"Lisa Page completed her brief detail and had returned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation weeks before our office was aware of the allegations", Carr also said in his statement, though it was not immediately clear to which allegations he was referring. Republicans in the House of Representatives have put forward measures to limit the special counsel probe or have called for his ousting or resignation.

Strzok was removed this summer after the inspector general of Justice Department discovered him and another person from Mueller's team exchanging anti-Trump text messages.

Trump supporters will likely view the revelations about Strzok as a path toward discrediting the Mueller probe.

The inquiry into Mr. Strzok is being conducted by the Justice Department's inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, who is leading a broad examination of how the F.B.I. handled the Clinton email investigation.
