Israel strikes a Syrian military base

Israel has launched missiles at a military installation outside the Syrian capital Damascus.

Two missiles were intercepted, according to the Syrian State TV, but the base suffered material damages, he extent of which is still not clear.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of the attack.

The Israeli reports claimed the strikes targeted the "Iranian base" south of Damascus. Beirut media cited by Israeli press indicated in turn that rockets were fired from Israeli aircraft that overflew Lebanese airspace, where y had simulated operations against local targets in a maneuver of Distraction.

The message was recorded on Thursday, before the reported Israeli air strike on an Iranian base near al-Qiswa.

Israel has long warned that Iran is trying to establish a permanent presence in Syria.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.

Earlier this year, a senior Israeli official vowed that Israel would bomb Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's palace in Damascus if Hezbollah continued to expand its sway over the war-torn country. With several hundred Revolutionary Guards and dozens of field instructors, he directs a multinational force comprising 7,000 Hezbollah fighters and several thousands of Shi'a combatants. A series of satellite images showed construction at the location of the alleged base, which was made known to the BBC by a western intelligence source.
