Michael Flynn Pleads Guilty: What You Need to Know

Former U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn arrives for a plea hearing at U.S. District Court in Washington, December 1, 2017. We hope that the cooperation of General Flynn that Special Counsel has secured as a part of this plea agreement extends to Flynn's cooperation with our committee, as his testimony could greatly advance our efforts.

Disgraced national security adviser Michael Flynn is prepared to testify that President Trump "directed him to make contact with the Russians" during last year's presidential campaign, according to reports.

But, he said, "through my faith in God, I am working to set things right".

Flynn rejected claims that he had committed treason, but said he accepts "full responsibility for his actions." .

The charge against Flynn is the first in Mueller's probe that has reached someone in the Trump White House and is the latest sign that the special counsel's investigation is intensifying, CNN reported.

"The charge relates to false statements Flynn made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on January 24 - four days after President Trump was inaugurated - about his conversations with Kislyak during the transition".

The document that was filed with the indictment in a Washington D.C. court, lists statements from Flynn as to why he would have met with Russian officials and who may have directed him to do so during the transition between President Barack Obama's administration and the incoming Donald Trump administration.

Flynn admitted he lied to FBI investigators about his private discussions at the end of December 2016 with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, about U.S. sanctions imposed on Moscow by the administration of then president Barack Obama. Mueller's prosecutors did not reveal the names of the officials, but indicated they were senior and within Trump's inner circle. Flynn described to them how Russian Federation would not retaliate for the sanctions following team Trump's request.

Flynn had told Pence and other White House officials that he had merely spoken to the then-Russian ambassador about their winter holidays when in reality the two men had discussed the Obama administration's sanctions against Moscow.

The charges against Flynn relate to a series of discussions the general had last December, during the presidential transition, when he reportedly told Kislyak that Trump's White House might go easy on sanctions against Russian Federation that were imposed by President Obama and asked Kislyak to sabotage a United Nations resolution on Israel that Obama's White House supported.

In a striking rupture with past practice, the Obama administration refrained from vetoing the condemnation, opting instead to abstain. Trump has reportedly rued the day that Flynn forced himself out by misrepresenting his contacts with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak - contacts which are at the heart of his guilty plea - and even sought leniency for Flynn from then-FBI Director James Comey. "It was about the 35 guys who were thrown out", Flynn told the Daily Caller at the time.

"The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year", he continued.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn", he said.

The opposition Democratic Party was quick to slam Trump.

But Trump has repeatedly rejected that view.

"Nothing that I heard, your honor", Flynn replied.
