YouTube to launch story feature 'Reels' akin to Snapchat, Instagram

YouTube to launch story feature 'Reels' akin to Snapchat, Instagram

Moreover, YouTube has also "optimised" notifications about new Community posts, but subscribers won't get a notification for every new post.

Community was introduced past year as a sort of on-site/in-app social network, which allowed creators to interact with their fans more by including messages, sneak preview GIFS, and polls.

The concept of Stories was first introduced by Snapchat and later adopted by many other online platforms including Facebook and Instagram, though YouTube Community's own spin adds some slight variations to it.

It's early days still, and the company hasn't said much about the feature, though we were able to parse some facts together in order to provide you with a more fuller picture of how Reels will work on YouTube.

The Google-owned video site announced Wednesday that it's putting its own spin on the slideshow-like format popularized by Snapchat and co-opted by almost every other social tech company since.

Unlike stories found on other apps, these Reels don't expire, so your fans will be able to access them whenever they'd like. We learned that you want the flexibility to create multiple Reels and have them not expire, so we'll give you those options. Under this feature, creators can record a few videos of up to 30 seconds each. Moreover, YouTube has also talked about its Community tab which now has over 10,000 subscribers. YouTube's take on the feature with Reels is a way to let creators - and potentially publishers down the road - produce similar short-form videos within its own service instead of people jumping ship for other apps that already offer it. However, unlike Stories, videos posted on Reels will not come with an expiry date.

YouTube is always touted as being about the community.

YouTube has shared a video of how Reels looks like. Now the most engaged viewers will see Community posts in their Home feed regardless of being subscribed to the channel or not. The authors of the channels in the YouTube Community, in addition to the video, can share with followers photos, gifs and text posts.
