Reported plans to fire Tillerson roil State Department

Sen. Tom CottonTom CottonGOP sen: Fire anyone in CFPB who disobeys Mulvaney Five health-care fights facing Congress in December Cotton: I hope we go back to health care next year MORE (R-Ark.) would then replace Pompeo as Central Intelligence Agency chief, the Times reported, according to the White House's plan.

If Cotton is appointed and confirmed to a Trump administration post, he'd be temporarily replaced in the Senate by Arkansas's Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, before a likely special election to fill the rest of his term later this year.

"Secretary Tillerson continues to lead the State Department and the entire cabinet is focused on completing this incredibly successful first year of President Trump's administration", she added in a statement distributed by the White House pool.

But he still would suffer from problems that have afflicted Tillerson, chief among them a boss who has shown little regard for diplomacy and no qualms about undermining his secretary of state with tweets, current and former US officials said.

When asked about reports, Mr Trump declined to say whether he wanted Mr Tillerson to remain in the job.

"This is a hellish environment for a secretary of state", said one State Department official on condition of anonymity.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders later told reporters: "As the President just said, 'Rex is here.' There are no personnel announcements at this time". But the timing of such a change is unclear.

"So the question is not whether Pompeo can do the job but whether the president is going to let Pompeo do the job". Tillerson could be ousted in the coming weeks, the New York Times reported, citing anonymous senior administration officials.

Tillerson successfully convinced Mr. Trump to keep the U.S.in the Iran nuclear deal.

The two have clashed on policy issues, including North Korea.

Tillerson has at times put distance between himself and Trump's positions. The reason for the major shake-up is because Trump has reportedly "soured" on Tillerson and "is ready to make a change at the State Department".
