What to Know About Meghan Markle's Affordable, Yet Chic Engagement Coat

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be a national holiday, Downing Street has announced.

Prince Harry is following the lead of his brother Prince William, who gave Kate Middleton the 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring that once belonged to his mother.

Markle revealed the moment was "so sweet and natural and very romantic" and Prince Harry couldn't finish his sentence before she said yes. The Suits star also said she's "very happy" about the engagement.

As she got to know Harry, Markle learnt about the huge amount of public scrutiny that the royals face, and she said she was not prepared for the level of attention their relationship would have.

"Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person", they said.

That statement said the couple were "a few months into a relationship" and it was "not right" that Ms Markle should receive such treatment.

"Any the end of day I'm really just proud of who I am and where I come from and we have never put any focus on that", she said in the BBC interview.

Ms Markle credited her American background - and lack of exposure to British tabloids - with allowing her to get to know Prince Harry naturally and organically.

The two met in July 2016 through mutual friends in London.

Exasperated by the media frenzy, the palace also released an extraordinary statement attacking the "sexism" and "racism" directed at Markle, who is of mixed race.

"We're a couple. We're in love", she said in the interview.

She was born in Los Angeles in 1981.

Much of the criticism toward Markle stemmed from the fact she attended Catholic high school, had a black father and white mother and has been divorced.

Until recently, a union with Ms Markle would have ruled Prince Harry out of succeeding to the throne - due to her being a Roman Catholic.

The home has been owned by the royal family since 1689, when King William III and Queen Mary II purchased it for £20,000.

They will marry in the northern Spring of 2018.

There is a long-running custom barring royals from marrying Catholics and divorcees.

According to The Telegraph, the couple will most likely be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex once they are married, when Queen Elizabeth is expected to award dukedom to Harry. The ring, which was designed by Prince Harry himself, is made with one big stone from Botswana and two smaller diamonds from Princess Diana's personal collection.
