Macy's says it's fixed gift, credit card issue from Black Friday

Thanksgiving Day e-commerce sales totaled $2.87 billion, up 18.3% year-over-year (YoY). Cyber Monday sales will be even bigger than Black Friday sales, experts say.

A report in The Financial Times said the holiday season was set to be the first in which more shopping will happen online than in stores.

Apparel retailer Gap, which has already been called out by multiple analysts over the weekend for the strength of its Old Navy and Banana Republic Black Friday deals, saw its stock climb almost 3 percent Monday morning. Those figures were released by Adobe Digital Insights, which tracks 80 percent of online spending at the 100 largest retail websites in the United States, CNN reported.

According to Adobe Analytics, which measures 100 of the largest retailers in the USA, retailers raked in US$7.9 billion on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, with Cyber Monday expected to bring in another US$6.6 billion. Adobe says online sales at the 100 largest U.S. Web retailers totaled approximately $7.9 billion on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, marking a almost 18 percent increase from 2016.

A meager dip is good news for traditional retailers.

On the other hand, Barclaycard estimated that spending was up eight per cent on the day - boosted by online sales despite the varying emphasis retailers gave to online or in-store campaigns in their Black Friday strategies.

But Brian Field, senior director of advisory services for ShopperTrak, is optimistic.

Black Friday follows Thanksgiving Day that is observed on the fourth Thursday of November, heralding the Christmas shopping season. Last-minute mobile improvements and mobile-specific deals may boost conversion and avoid lost sales to competitors, as once consumers leave a mobile site or app, there is no guarantee they will come back or go to the corresponding brick-and-mortar location. Shoppers started lining up as early as 5:45 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
