Thamel: Dan Mullen targeted to be next head coach at Florida

According to ESPN's Chris Low, the Gators are finalizing a deal with Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen to take up the same position with Florida.

Given the volatility of the college football coaching carousel, the Gators landing Mullen would be a solid choice when you consider his reputation for developing quarterbacks - something Florida's woeful offense desperately needs - and the fact he made a bottom-feeder SEC program fairly relevant.

According to a Yahoo Sports report, a decision is expected by the end of the day on Sunday.

Mullen is 69-46 in nine seasons with the Bulldogs, including an 8-4 mark this season. Stricklin and Mullen worked together in Starkville, Mississippi, from 2009 to 2016.

Mississippi State has won its last two bowl games, most recently defeating Miami (Ohio) in the St. Petersburg Bowl a year ago. Along with coaching quarterback Tim Tebow at Florida, Mullen also coached Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith at Utah and Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott at Mississippi State. "I'm fortunate to be the head coach and (athletic director) John (Cohen) and Dr. Keenum have both told me they want me to continue to be the head coach here-before the game they did, we'll see what they say right now".

The decision to hire Mullen came quickly after former National Football League and OR head coach Chip Kelly chose UCLA. He'll replace Jim McElwain, who was sacked during the season, weeks before UF played at Williams-Brice.
