Massive manhunt underway following shooting death of Trooper on I-45

Waller County is located northwest of Houston.

DPS says Allen joined the department in 2002 and was married with three children.

A DPS trooper was shot and killed near Interstate 45 in Fairfield, TX around 3:45 Thursday evening during a traffic stop.

Authorities say the gunman is Darbrett Black.

"With heavy hearts on this Thanksgiving, Cecilia and I express our most honest condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the Trooper who was callously killed today in the line of duty. The suspect was identified as Dabrett Black, a 5'11" black man weighing about 175 pounds.

Dabrett Black is being held in the Brazos County jail Friday morning.

KYTX-TV reported in July that Black was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and aggravated assault against a public servant following a police chase in Smith County.

Following news of the trooper's death, Waller County Sherrif's Office said on Facebook that they were saddened by the death of a "brother".

DPS released a statement on its Twitter page identifying the trooper as 41-year-old Damon Allen. The agency said the suspect shot and killed the trooper with a rifle during a traffic stop.

Lonny Haschel, a public information officer with the Texas Highway Patrol, says,"It takes time for the Texas Rangers, the investigators to come in and analyze every bit of physical evidence at the scene".

"This morning and the days to follow please continue to keep Trooper Allen's family, friends and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers".

The first shooting happened in Freestone County, about 90 minutes South of Dallas.
