Rahul Gandhi likely to be Congress party President; Elections on 16th December

Addressing media following a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of "sabotaging" the Winter Session of Parliament in an attempt to "escape" constitutional accountability ahead of the Gujarat elections in December. So, it's expected that Rahul will be the next party president on 1st December.

The counting of the votes will be held on December 18.

The party after a detailed discussion with the veteran leaders reached to the point of making Rahul Gandhi as the new party president. Party sources said Rahul is likely to be the sole candidate in the organisational poll and is "deemed to be the next party chief" on December 5, a few days before the Gujarat Assembly polls.

Sonia Gandhi will reportedly step down as party president and continue to serve as chairperson. "Let us do our best to prove that people are not fooled and that they will make the right decision and defeat the present dispensation there". But more than her role inside the Parliament, party sources contend, her helming the UPA was the need of the hour to keep the secular alliance going. Several party leaders have had directly or indirectly indicated that Rahul would soon take the reins of the party.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury recently called Sonia the "glue" that binds the Congress as well as the opposition.

"Rahul has all the qualifications needed to provide a strong and visionary leadership to the Congress", he added. "Soniaji is not well and can not undertake country-wide campaigns".

"Unlike Modi - who has associated himself with such ideas as Swachh Bharat - there is no distinctive area with which Rahul has been able to associate himself till now", she said.

Gandhi also took potshots at the GST and demonetisation. As for his party's interests, Elangovan said that there was not going to be changes in the UPA as it would be headed by Sonia. "This vilification is blatant and for all to see", she said.

The BJP on Monday hit back at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for her criticism of the government over likely curtailment of Parliament's Winter Session, saying her charge was a "lie" and would rank among the "greatest hypocrisies" in recent times. "In fact, the Winter Session in 1990 began after Christmas, on 27th December 1990 and lasted till 11th January 1991", he said.

She said the government was sabotaging the session on "flimsy grounds". Rumours are rife that Rahul is set to be the only candidate in fray and while his appointment as the party president is imminent, it is the dilemma of its timing that appears to have caught the Congress in a fix. He also said the session would be held for sure and that the Congress will be "totally exposed".
