Crackdown on MS-13 gang nets more than 200 arrests

ICE conducted the gang arrests in a variety of localities, including sanctuary communities such as Baltimore, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

The operation was led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations, with the help from federal, state, local and global law enforcement partners. Gang members from MS-13 have been implicated in several high-profile homicides around the United States.

"This successful operation continues our efforts to attack MS-13 - both domestically and overseas - disrupting their financial networks", said Homan.

"This is a great operation, but we are not done", the ICE chief said.

A major crackdown led to the arrest of more than 200 alleged members and associates of the worldwide street gang, MS-13, officials announced Wednesday.

National Gang Unit, the operation was a multi-phase, multi-month project of numerous federal law enforcement agencies, including ICE, U.S. Customs and Immigration Service, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Department of Justice.

Of the 267 total arrests, ICE detained 214 in the United States (53 others were arrested in El Salvador).

Among those arrested, 16 were citizens, while the other 198 were foreign nationals. Only 5 of those born overseas had legal status and 64 had crossed the border illegally as minors, they said. An arrest in Los Angles yielded a man who had an Interpol Red Notice, a form of worldwide arrest warrant, for gang-related offenses and who is a suspect in the murder of a police officer in El Salvador. "Operation Raging Bull" took place from September to November and utilized ICE, Border Patrol, USCIS, Bureau of Prisons, and other domestic and worldwide law enforcement agencies to identify and arrest members of MS-13. MS-13 is the only street gang designated by the Treasury Department as a transnational criminal organization. An estimated 10,000 members live in the United States, according to the Justice Department.

But gang membership is not a crime, and the agents did not have a criminal warrant. "The violence they perpetrate is shocking, and shows no remorse, or even a basic respect for human life", said acting ICE Director Tom Homan.

Of the 214 MS-13 members arrested nationally, the largest number were found on Long Island, according to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

MS-13 is described as one of the most unsafe criminal organization in the country and the D.C. area is no exception.

Trump-who hopes to "destroy" the violent gang-came one step closer, as authorities announced the conclusion of the second phase of "Operation Raging Bull".
