Want a Longer Life? Get a Dog, Study Says

Dog ownership is associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death, finds a new Swedish study published Friday in the journal Scientific Reports.

The study-with a sample size hundreds of times larger than any other studies on this topic-was not created to show a cause-and-effect relationship between dog ownership and reduced risk of death or cardiovascular disease, or to determine why these factors may be related. "We see effects in the single households that are much stronger than in multiple-person households", she said. For dog owners who live alone, their risk of a death caused by cardiovascular disease decreases by 36 percent and their overall risk of death decreases by 33 percent. While people who live alone are not necessarily lonely, many in the Swedish study seemed to benefit disproportionately from having a dog around.

The study looked at over 3.4 million Swedish individuals between the ages of 40 and 80 sampled from a national database and the Swedish Twin Register over a 12-year study period.

"Other explanations include an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome in the owner", she said in a university news release. "If you have a dog you neutralise the effects of living alone".

They found there was a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in owners of dogs, particularly of hunting breeds. The study excluded the very young due to their low likelihood of developing CVD and the very elderly for their low odds of owning a dog.

Senior author of the study, Tove Fall, elaborated on this, saying: "There might also be differences between owners and non-owners already before buying a dog, which could have influenced our results, such as those people choosing to get a dog tending to be more active and of better health".

Another small study found that people who walked dogs five times a week lost an average of 14.4 pounds over a year, which also helps heart health. We've known for a while that you live longer when you live with someone else, but the added benefit of having a dog is that they need to get outside and go for walks, which forces us to get up and take them no matter how exhausted we are or what the weather is like.

Even in such cases, the authors wrote, dog ownership has consistently been linked to improved survival in coronary artery disease patients. "I think that a pet brings a lot of joy and companionship into a house, so if a person has the capacity to take care of it, they certainly should", she says.

Experts in the United States agreed that the findings made sense.
