Japanese Train Company Apologises For Train Leaving 20 Seconds Early

The overly eager train reportedly pulled out of the Minami-Nagareyama station at 9:44:20 a.m. on November 14.

The Tsukuba Express railway connects Akihabara and Tsukuba, two towns that are about 60 kilometres apart in a 45-minute ride, reports Bloomberg. A company in Japan is taking costumer service to the next level by apologizing for one of its trains leaving 20 seconds early.

Japanese trains are awesome for a number of reasons, not the least of which is how amazingly punctual they are.

The company said in a statement that the train on the line, which runs between Tokyo and the city of Tsukuba was supposed to leave at 9:44:40 local time, but left instead at 9:44:20.

One amused reader said: "This train company's apology for a 20-second-early departure is one of the best things about Japan".

In a statement in Japanese on its website, management "deeply" apologised for the "severe inconvenience" caused to customers who missed the early departure and could not afford to wait for the next one, which was due four minutes later.

The 20-second gaffe may not sound like a big deal, but the Japanese train system is world-famous for its precision and efficiency.

As Japan's trains are well-known for their punctuality, many residents in Japan tend to plan their commute so that they arrive at the platform just as the train is pulling up, according to Japan Today.

That said, the company also pointed out that no customers had raised any complaints about the early departure.
