Milestone test shows that this reusable spacecraft can safely fly

When the company was focused on developing a crewed version of Dream Chaser, there were plans for additional glide flights, at higher speeds and with pilots on board, to simulate abort conditions, said Steve Lindsey, vice president of Space Exploration Systems at Sierra Nevada Corporation.

Yesterday, November 12, in the U.S. private Corporation Sierra Nevada told the public about the successful completion of the tests reusable spaceship Dream Chaser.

The engineering test article (ETA) was lifted by a helicopter sky-crane and released from an altitude of over 3,000 meters, Space News reported.

Dream Chaser made a landing at a USA air force base Edwards, which is located in the Mojave desert in California.

Along with SpaceX and Orbital ATK, Sierra Nevada is under contract from NASA for as many as six cargo flights to the station. The company promised to release more test flight details, images and video on Monday (Nov. 13). The vehicle occupied the same hanger that Nasa used before for its Space Shuttle Enterprise in the late 1970s. NASA Commercial Crew Program space act agreement partner manager Mike Lee called it "a significant achievement that successfully demonstrated the final phase of atmospheric flight that will occur after re-entry from an orbital mission". Those missions will land at Kennedy Space Center. At today's media teleconference, he said that a number of upgrades were made to this vehicle for Saturday's flight to certify systems for use on the orbital version. But in 2014, NASA didn't pick the Dream Chaser to do crewed flights to the ISS, going with SpaceX and Boeing's proposed vehicles instead.

For now, Sierra Nevada Corporation is working on the cargo version of Dream Chaser to serve a NASA Commercial Resupply Services 2 contract it received in 2016.

It is 30 feet (9 meters) long, about one quarter the length of a space shuttle and is a type of craft known as a "lifting body" in which aerodynamic lift is generated by its shape rather than traditional wings. The Dream Chaser spacecraft developed specifically for bringing supplied to the ISS is in the testing stages and passed a test for approach and landing on Saturday.

Sirangelo said the company is planning to build two orbital vehicles at the moment and each is designed for at least 15 flights each with a turnaround time of 60 days. He said, however, that Dream Chaser will be able to be launched on a variety of launch vehicles, not only Atlas V, which is due to be phased out in the early 2020s.
