Finally, Bengal wins 'Rosogolla war' over Odisha

West Bengal and the neighbouring state Odisha were engaged in a legal battle over the origin of the cottage cheese-based sweet since June 2015.

Odisha had claimed that the sweet originated in the Jagannath Temple of Puri and has been around since the 12th century.

West Bengal on 14th November 2017 won the long bitter battle over Rosgulla as Geographical Indications (GI), a Chennai-based Registry announced that one of India's signature candies originated in the state and not Odisha.

The confectioners of Odisha also organised an exhibition to make people aware about the state's claim over rosogolla. For a product to get GI tag, it has to have a unique quality, reputation or characteristic which is attributable to its geographic origin.

Even as the tweet by the Bengal CM was projected as if the long debate over the origin of the sweet and syrupy Rasagola has been settled in favour of West Bengal, it turns out that the GI tag has been granted for "Banglar Rasogolla" which applies only to the sweet produced in West Bengal.

Veteran stage and screen personality Soumitra Chatterjee said: "Historically, it feels good to know officially that rosogolla was invented in Bengal".

Food processing Minister of the state, Abdur Rezzak Mollah talking to media said, "Happy and relieved". We are all so happy.

Kolkata: The two and a half years of bitter tussle ended on a sweet note for West Bengal.

Countering Odisha's claim, the Bengal government applied for GI tag from the GI registry in Chennai, asserting there was "ample" documentary evidence to prove the sweet belongs to Bengal and was invented by famous sweetmeat maker Nabin Chandra Das in 1868. "So far, we have not received any application from Odisha", official sources in the GI Registrar Office said. Led by the eminent scholar Asit Mohanty, the committees were to look into facts regarding the origin of rosogulla in Odisha and collect "conclusive evidence" to bolster the state's claim to rosogulla's legacy.

"The state government has borne the entire expenditure of the fight", added Das.
