Injured in France After Driver Rams Into Group of Students

The AFP news agency cited a French police source who said the auto "deliberately" rammed a group of three students - two of whom were badly injured, and one who was not as seriously hurt.

All three of Friday's victims, who were on a crosswalk when the ramming occurred, were in their 20s, with a 23-year-old woman the most seriously injured and two men aged 22 and 23 also hurt.

The source said that the 28-year-old driver told police he had acted "deliberately", but was not on a list of known extremists. "He was immediately arrested afterwards".

The driver has a history of mental illness, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The injured students were believed to be Chinese nationals, the BBC reported. They have been admitted to hospital in the city.

Police say the man is known for previous minor offences, notably drugs-related. La Dépêche du Midi newspaper quoted him as telling police he had heard voices telling him to harm someone.

Toulouse Prosecutor Pierre-Yves Couilleau said Friday evening that two students remained hospitalized and one had left the hospital.
