Texas gunman escaped mental health facility in 2012, threatened military superiors

The former USA serviceman who committed the deadliest mass shooting on record in Texas escaped from a mental hospital in 2012 as he faced court-martial on domestic violence charges for which he was later convicted, a police report revealed on Tuesday.

"We are checking all of the Air Force databases, and there are several of them, to find out and confirm that all court martial convictions for these kinds of offenses have been reported in the civilian database".

A major sporting goods dealer in San Antonio later confirmed that Kelley twice passed a required criminal background check when he bought guns there during the past year, despite having a criminal record that should have prevented those purchases.

Questions immediately arose-how did Kelley pass a background check, considering the fact that he had a domestic violence charge?

Devin P. Kelley was general court-martialed in 2012, two years into his Air Force service, for assaulting his wife and stepson.

More information has emerged since the shooting of Kelley's risky behaviour, with the US Air Force acknowledging it did not share information about the shooter's court-martial conviction for domestic assault with civilian law enforcement agencies. The Comal County sheriff said he was reviewing whether his department mishandled the sexual assault investigation.

Police documents say that Kelley managed to escape the hospital, though he was apprehended by two officers in El Paso as he was trying to get a bus ticket to take him out of state.

Police were also advised that Kelley was a "danger to himself and others as he had already been caught sneaking fire arms on Hollaman Air Force base" and that he was "attempting to carry out death threats" that he had made against his military chain of command.

Earlier police reports revealed that Kelley had assaulted his wife and fractured his infant child's skull.

The authorities have said that Kelley's rampage may have stemmed from a "domestic situation" and that he sent threatening texts to his mother-in-law.
