Danica Roem, Metal Vocalist, Becomes Virginia's First Openly Transgender Legislator

Virginia Democrat Danica Roems defeated Bob Marshall Tuesday night, becoming the first openly transgender person to be elected and seated to a state legislature.

'It's historic. It sends a message to politicians everywhere that the politics of bigotry is over, ' said Democratic House Caucus Chair Charniele Herring.

With her victory, the former journalist and current frontwoman for a "drunken thrash metal" band called Cab Ride Home, Roem beat a man who has been elected 13 times across a 26-year span. Marshall's quarter-century in office culminated in him being called "Virginia's Chief Homophobe" and now we know why-on the campaign trail, he consistently used incorrect pronouns for Roem and refused to be in the same room as her. Bye bye, bigot!

Roem, 33, openly discussed her gender identity during her campaign, but it was far from her focus.

She stressed creating jobs, improving schools and addressing traffic congestion, according to ABC News.

"I don't attack my constituents".

The win was not only monumental because Roem is the first trans person elected, but also because she won the election over someone who is vocally homophobic and transphobic. Jenkins, a 56-year-old poet and historian who transitioned in her 30s, brings 25 years of public service to the job.

Danica Roem Promises a "More Inclusive Commonwealth" She never uses the word "transgender", but images are shown with her campaigning while wearing a rainbow handkerchief scarf.

A lightning rod for controversy, Marshall often drew the ire of even his own party. Marshall also introduced a "bathroom bill" earlier this year that would have required transgender people to use a public restroom that corresponded with the sex on their birth certificate.

Roem raised $500,000 in donations, much of it coming from LGBT advocates and other supporters across the country, out raising Marshall 3-1, the Washington Post reported.

Roem wasn't the only transgender candidate elected Tuesday. "Though we all wish tonight would have turned out differently, I am deeply grateful for your support and effort over the years", he said. Tyler Titus, who is openly transgender, won a seat on a western Pennsylvania school board. Once she is in office, she will also be the first openly transgender person elected and seated to a US state legislature.
