Trump Eliminates TPS Protections for Nicaraguan Migrants

Trump Administration Announces The End To Protected Status For Nicaraguans The Trump administration is ending Temporary Protected Status for thousands of Nicaraguans who were given safe haven following devastating natural disasters decades ago.

The migrants were previously allowed to stay in the USA under Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, after hurricane Mitch hit Central America back in 1998. "People have been here for 25 years", Shannon said, "and for 25 years they have been working with a legal temporary visa".

She said the lives of thousands of Nicaraguan families who "help make the United States vibrant" would be disrupted and that both the US and Nicaragua would be harmed.

"Haiti is a textbook case for an 18-month extension due to Hurricane Matthew, the cholera epidemic, and incomplete quake recovery", said Steve Forester, immigration policy coordinator with the Boston-based Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti.

The decision to end TPS for Nicaraguans will affect approximately 2,500 people.

That Jan. 5 deadline means that after then, those Nicaraguans must be out of the country or they will be here illegally. We demand that DHS reverse their decision and keep TPS for immigrants from other countries under threat.

Homeland Security initially grants TPS for between six and 18 months, and can renew the status indefinitely if conditions remain unsafe or the country involved is unable to handle the return of its nationals. Haitians affected by the decision number 46,000.

But the protected status of almost 57,000 Hondurans, many of whom have also lived in the US for decades, was also threatened by Duke's announcement.

After the termination of the TPS designation, individuals will revert back to whatever legal status they had before they received TPS, senior administration officials said on a background call Monday night. Instead, they're getting a six-month extension, with a decision at a later date. Nicaraguan immigrants, who have lived in the United States for almost two decades, will have 12 months to leave their homes. "My hope is they change the legislation to make this a permanent thing for all the TPS recipients".

Given that numerous TPS recipients have been in this country for decades, administration officials said the White House would look to Congress to offer a permanent solution for TPS holders.

As ThinkProgress previously reported, some Haitian parents are weighing the costs of leaving their children here in the United States if they have to return.

The officials said the administration would support any effort by the U.S. Congress to find a more permanent solution for the Nicaraguans.

"I have never been so uneasy as I am now", Flores told Al Jazeera.

Although TPS is renewed on a regular basis, the administration's approach to restrict protections from deportations have made TPS-holders nervous said Portos. "This is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to dehumanize immigrants and communities of color, particularly when they are in their greatest need". But the fate of TPS is more tenuous under President Donald Trump whose executive orders on immigration aim to limit legal immigration and deport undocumented immigrants. Nearly 200,000 Salvadorans can lose TPS status as compared to the 30,000 Salvadorans who have DACA, according to figures on the Department of Homeland Security's website.
