Facebook intends its payments service to be as frictionless as possible within Messenger.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) just brought a much-anticipated feature for its ultra-popular Messenger chat app to one of the world's largest economies.

The ability to send money to contacts has existed in the U.S. since 2015, but this marks the first time the feature is being launched outside of the US. Now, the social giant is bringing the same functionality to the United Kingdom, marking the first time the service has launched outside of the US.

Facebook, the social network with 2 billion users, is said to be preparing tests of features that include a "red envelope" service for peer-to-peer payments and a "breaking news" tag for publishers, Recode reported.

David Marcus, the head of Messenger, said introducing a tool to "socially" transfer small amounts of money had proved appealing. If the friend hasn't set the system up, they'll be prompted to enter their card details to get the payment.

Virtual assistant "M" is on hand to recognise when you and a friend are chatting about money - so if you type about your friend owing you money, M will pop up and remind you how you can easily send or receive a payment via the app.

Have you ever gone somewhere with a friend and been in the position of forgetting your wallet, leaving your friend to pay for your coffee, drink, meal, or whatever?

Facebook has allowed users in the USA to make payments on Messenger since 2015, but now it's expanding the reach of the service to other countries.

So you'll be able to link when you sent over money to the relevant conversation with that person and also avoid the embarassment of having to chase them up for money if they owe you.

Other firms in the US market include Square, which lets users swap money via its "Cash" app, and Paypal, which acquired payment service Venmo.
