Senate Dems demand Sessions clarify testimony on Russian Federation

Sessions, now attorney general, has testified to Congress that he didn't know about of any people on the Trump campaign having contacts with Russians.

Page reportedly told House committee members that had mentioned the trip to Sessions, who denied having any knowledge of Trump campaign Russian Federation ties in his Senate confirmation hearing in January.

Senate Democrats have called on Jeff Sessions to clarify just how much he knew about attempts by the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election, following revelations that the attorney general was previously in a meeting with former Trump campaign aide-turned special counsel cooperator George Papadopoulos.

Sessions' testimony directly contradicts an Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit that alleges former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos spoke directly with Sessions about potentially arranging a meeting with then-candidate Trump during the 2016 election. "I changed my travel plans to go to Russian Federation'". "I am deeply troubled that this newest revelation strongly suggests that the Senate ― and the American public ― can not trust your word". The email went to "several members of the Campaign's foreign policy team", prosecutors alleged. He later told CNN's Jim Sciutto the Russian official's name.

Gordon said that he did not fault Sessions for not recalling things that Papadopoulos said in private settings, noting that thousands of people approached the campaign, "including many, many true volunteers".

Nonetheless, the court filing on Papadopoulos is now being contrasted with long-disputed answers Sessions gave the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing about Trump's campaign, including the exchange with Franken.

Blumenthal wrote Sessions that he should "immediately come before the Senate Judiciary Committee to update [his] testimony and correct any omissions and any statements that may have been incorrect or misleading".

Trump had nominated Clovis, his 2016 campaign's national co-chairman, to a top post as chief scientist at the Department of Agriculture.

"It might be worth writing a letter and saying 'What happened?' I wouldn't mind writing a letter, because he was pretty definitive he never had that discussion about Russia", Graham of SC said in an interview.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, told CBS News there is "no question" Sessions needs to appear before Congress again in an open session to "reconcile" his testimony.

Following the Post report, Sessions recused himself from the Justice Department's Russian Federation probes - an action that infuriated Trump.
