BlizzCon 2017 | StarCraft 2 is going free to play

Blizzard's real-time strategy game (RTS) StarCraft II will be going 100% free-to-play, later this month. If you already own Wings of Liberty, you'll get the Heart of the Swarm expansion for free. Players will also enjoy expanded access to StarCraft II's highly popular co-op mode, with all Co-op Commanders playable for free.

The entire Wings of Liberty campaign is free, but the single-player Heart of the swarm, Nova Covert Ops and Legacy of the Void campaigns are available separately for $14.99 each or $39.99 when purchased as a bundle in the Campaign Collection.

"StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty brings players back to the sci-fi world they've been pining over for more than a decade, and it doesn't disappoint", we wrote at the time.

The free version of StarCraft II will come with the Wings of Liberty solo campaign and give you access to the multiplayer ladder. Players will be able to tailor the experience, choosing their own mission path and selecting technology and research upgrades to suit their playing style throughout the 29-mission campaign.

More news: UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon resigns over misconduct claims

New multiplayer updates were revealed for StarCraft II as well. Be aware however that you need to log in and claim it before December 8. "With the massive Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, endlessly replayable co-op mode, prestigious ranked ladder, comprehensive map-making tools, and more, StarCraft II now delivers the ultimate real-time strategy experience completely free".

What's really cool about the multiplayer aspect is the fact that Blizzard will require players to win 10 matches in unranked or against AI, aiming to preserve the integrity of online play.

StarCraft is a big part of BlizzCon, but also present at the annual event are Blizzard's other franchises, such as Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch. If you have purchased all three campaigns as of October 31, Blizzard will be sending you an exclusive Ghost skin and three new portraits, as a thank you.
