Farmers central to plan for food processing, says PM Modi

Will this event strengthen India's position as a global food factory? It welcomes to host a congregation of global investors and business leaders of major food companies from November 3 to 5 in New Delhi.

Altogether 6 nos. of Farmers Producers Company, namely, Ampri Orange Agro Producer Company, Brahmaputra Valley Honey Agro Producer Company, Janoki Agro Producer Company, Amlighat Banana Agro Producer Company, Merapani Agro Producer Company & Jirson Agro Producer Company, promoted by the Department of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam participated in the World Food India, 2017. He said that India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world. He also stressed that the private sector needed to invest more in contract farming, raw material-sourcing and creating agri-linkages.

The Prime Minister said there are opportunities in post-harvest management, like primary processing and storage, cold chain and refrigerated transportation.

Minister of Food Processing Industries added that India was geared up for a revolution in the food processing sector and it was clear that the global companies were eagerly looking towards India for collaboration.

Other MoUs signed included Amazon in food-retail business, Sharaf Group of UAE for farm produce, collection, processing and export; and YES Bank for financing about 100 food-processing projects in the country with an average ticket size of ₹10-crore each.

While diversified conglomerate ITC said it would invest over Rs 10,000 crore to set up 20 integrated food processing and logistics facilities, PepsiCo reiterated that it along with its partners would invest Dollars 2 billion in the next five years. He said India is also rapidly progressing on the Global Innovation Index, Global Logistics Index and Global Competitiveness Index.

The event is organised by the Food Processing Industries Ministry in Delhi.

"It will raise farmers' income and also enhance nutrition levels", he said.

The funds were received by the food processing units under the scheme for Technology Upgradation, Establishment and Modernisation exercises. "India is the third largest economy in terms of purchasing power and our demand for food is said to double over the next five years", Badal said.
