Twitter acknowledged that Trump's tweet had caused an uproar but said it was allowed to stay because of its "newsworthiness". "My guess: Trump's lawyers told him to delete his account, because he is in serious legal jeopardy", tweeted journalist David Klion.

He added: "Seriously, what if this person had tweeted about a fictional nuclear strike on North Korea?" "If an ordinary citizen tweeted some of what he tweeted, I would think some of them would be taken down".

With any past president, a tweet like that would immediately be assumed as the result of some sort of hack.
