Twitter promises 'new rules' after women hold day-long boycott

Twitter has promised to do more to combat sexual harassment, hateful symbols and violent groups.

Earlier this week, Twitter made the bad decision to suspend actress Rose McGowan after she spoke out against serial sexual abuser Harvey Weinstein and told Ben Affleck to "fuck off" for enabling him. The movie mogul was sacked last Sunday by the company he co-founded amid accusations that he sexually harassed or sexually assaulted women.

"We see voices being silenced on Twitter every day", says Dorsey.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey admitted on Friday that the company's minimalist approach to moderation was not working, saying the site is committed to taking a "more aggressive stance in our rules and how to enforce them" in the wake of numerous high-profile public relations nightmares.

He said the decision was announced late on Friday "because we spent the whole day working on it and wanted to announce as soon as we were ready". The hashtag #WOCAffirmation (created by Reign of April on Twitter) began trending Friday as a way to amplify the voices and perspectives of marginalized women.

In 2017, he declared - without specifics - that "we made it our top priority and made a lot of progress".

The Twitter statement on the ban: "We have been in touch with Ms. McGowan's team". "We've been working intensely over the past few months and focused today on making some critical decisions".

Software engineer Kelly Ellis suggested in a tweet sent Thursday that #WomenBoycottTwitter in solidarity with McGowan (who recently alleged on Twitter that Harvey Weinstein raped her) and "all the victims of hate and harassment Twitter fails to support". The updates will "start rolling out in the next few weeks", he added.

Tweeting something abusive? Think twice now. It is also being reported that Twitter has earlier also faced criticism for not being able to tackle abuse against women users on its platform.
