Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins says she will not run for governor

But Friday, McConnell says Collins' decision to pass on a gubernatorial run is a good one.

The moderate Republican was first elected in 1996 and has played a pivotal role in the Senate in recent debates about health care policy. "As I thought about this senator's words, I realized how much remains to be done in a divided and troubled Washington if we are to serve the people of our states", she said.

A popular figure in Maine, Collins has previously spoken about the appeal of serving as governor, a job that would allow her to "work more directly on job creation". She said she was "forever grateful" for her increasing support from ME residents. She ran for governor in 1994, losing to King.

Ultimately, it appears to have been the environment in Washington that's convinced Collins to stay. "She holds a critical position in the U.S. Senate right now, and her colleagues don't want her to leave because she's seen as a voice of reason".

Independents are a powerful force in ME politics, with Collins' Senate counterpart, Angus King, one of only two independents in the chamber.

Collins, who like all Republicans in the Senate in 2009 voted against the sweeping healthcare legislation, said she believed urgent action was needed to improve it but criticized the way repeal efforts had been handled over the summer.

She would join a crowded field in the race for governor to replace two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who can not run again because of term limits.

After signing the order, Trump then advised the Democrats to come to the table and cut a deal with him, making it fairly clear that the entire effort ― despite the hugely negative effect it might have on many people's health and lives ― is part of the president's ongoing negotiating strategy.

The 64-year-old Collins made the announcement Friday morning at an event in Rockport.

"Let me address the elephant in the room" she said, at 8:20 a.m.", said Collins, who then said she will remain in the Senate and not run for governor, as has been discussed and speculated.

The party primaries are in June and the general election is November 2018.

Two years later, Collins managed to win the Republican nomination for the Senate seat being vacated by William Cohen, who went on to become Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton.
