Storm expected to become Hurricane Ophelia, possibly by tonight

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Ophelia's center is 745 miles (1,195 kilometers) southwest of the Azores late Wednesday.

"Maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour [120 km/h] with higher gusts".

Through today, October 11, we've had 15 named storms - 10 of which have been hurricanes, and 5 of those 10 became major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

After bringing storm surge flooding and power outages to the U.S. Gulf Coast, the remnants of Nate will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the Northeast Monday.

The other disclaimer about tropical cyclones before satellites were routinely used to examine the entire tropical Atlantic Basin in 1966 is that some tropical storms - even hurricanes - may have been missed that could have influenced any streaks, especially in the 19th century.

Hurricane Ophelia took shape outside of the "main development region", where most of the Atlantic hurricanes are known to form. The most recent was a tropical depression that was previously Hurricane Vince. Some further strengthening is possible over the next two days. It is also expected to make a gradual turn to the northeast starting Thursday night. Hurricane season continues until November 30.

Ophelia officially strengthened into a hurricane in the far, Eastern Atlantic Wednesday evening. Its rainbands could hit the southern part of the Azores islands by the weekend and possibly reach Spain and Portugal on the Iberian Peninsula.

It is now located 745 miles southwest of the Azores, but as it gains more speed by the end of the week, it could head northeast toward the south of Azores. Then Ophelia will curve north towards Ireland's west coast as a post-tropical storm.
