Israel to follow United States, quit UNESCO

Phạm Sanh Châu, Vietnamese candidate for the director-general position of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), made a decision to withdraw his name prior to the third round of voting on Wednesday.

"This is all the more true on Thursday", she continued "when the rise of violent extremism and terrorism calls for new long-term responses for peace and security, to counter racism and antisemitism, to fight ignorance and discrimination".

President George W. Bush announced America's return in 2002, but relations soured again in 2011 when Barack Obama pulled the plug on funding to the body after its members voted to admit Palestine as a full member. The U.S. now owes about $550 million in back payments.

The state department said it would establish an observer mission at the Paris-based organisation to replace its representation. It cited US belief in "the need for fundamental reform in the organization". He said UNESCO had "turned into a theatre of the absurd; instead of preserving history, it twists it".

He said he has ordered Israeli diplomats to prepare Israel's withdrawal from the organisation in concert with the Americans.

The United Nation's education, cultural and scientific agency has passed several resolutions against Israel.

He said: "Unesco has become a battlefield for Israel bashing and has disregarded its true role and objective".

As stated in the statement issued on Thursday by the chief of the press service of the US State Department, Heather Nauert, the decision will come into force on December 31, 2018.

The organization has voted through several decision that have enraged Israel, particularly resolutions that appear to downplay or omit the importance of holy sites in Jerusalem and West Bank to Judaism.

The decision follows a string of UNESCO decisions that have drawn criticism from the United States and Israel.

Israel says it will join the USA in pulling out of the UN's cultural organisation after United States officials cited "anti-Israel bias".

The agency is known for designating world heritage sites such as Syria's Palmyra and the US Grand Canyon.

She traced the decades-long USA ties with Unesco, and noted that the Statue of Liberty is among the many World Heritage sites protected by the United Nations agency.

"It's a loss to UNESCO, it's a loss to the family of the United Nations and it's a loss to multilateralism", Bokova said in a statement. The U.S. rejoined it in 2003. The Reagan administration withdrew from the organisation in 1984 - accusing the agency of corruption and an ideological bias towards the then Soviet Union - but the USA rejoined in 2002.

"At the time when conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack", the statement said.
