Amazon gives teens shopping independence

As things stand, shoppers must be 18 years of age or over to buy goods through Amazon, but moving forward the internet giant will allow 13 to 17-year-olds to get their own login credentials that are associated with their parents' Amazon account.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need".

Parents can supervise loosely by simply setting a pre-approved spending limit per order, or set it up so they're notified of every order and must approve it. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents", said Michael Carr, Vice President, Amazon Households, in a statement about the launch. Upon receiving such a message (via email and/or text messaging), parents can reply with "Y" or "N" to approve or deny the purchase. Once received, the parent confirms which payment method and shipping address will be used for teens' orders.

Parents can set up the teen accounts in two ways. They can shop online, stream videos and tap into the perks of their parents' Prime memberships.

Amazon (AMZN) now wants teenagers to shop on their own without mom and dad chiming in. "This is a move that will get families deeper into Amazon, while also cultivating future Prime members". Parents then approve or deny the order, though the system can be set to automatically approve orders if desired. Once the order is placed, parents can see an itemized invoice and are able to cancel and return items, according to Amazon.com's normal terms.

Teens with an Amazon account are about to acquire some buying power.
