Trump Threatens NBC's TV License After Network Publishes Unfavorable Reports

Trump Threatens NBC's TV License After Network Publishes Unfavorable Reports

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he wants the US nuclear arsenal in "tiptop shape" but has not asked that it be greatly expanded.

Trump's morning tweets came after NBC News reported that Trump purportedly told senior national security advisers during a meeting last summer that he favored what amounted to almost a tenfold increase in nuclear weapons.

It was after this meeting, NBC notes, that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly called Trump a "fucking moron".

"I know the capability that we have; believe me, and it is awesome, it is massive, and when they make up stories like that that's just made up", Trump said in the Oval.

"The president's threat against NBC and other media outlets is far from empty", Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said in a statement released today.

Tensions between the United States and North Korea have intensified in recent months as the Trump administration has struggled to rein in Kim Jong-un's expanding nuclear and ballistic weapons programme.

"Recent reports that the president called for an increase in the United States nuclear arsenal are absolutely false", Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said in a statement.

NBC News has incurred the wrath of Trump's ire in recent days after a report last week Tillerson called the president a "moron" and almost resigned.

Trump decried the story as fake, but Tillerson declined to explicitly reject the claim.

"The whole point of the First Amendment is to make sure the government can't stop speech before it happened and the government can't censor speech because it disagrees with what that speech says".

Noting that Trump greatly benefits from a free press, the Reliable Sources host explained that Trump tends to rip "fake news" when the White House is underperforming.

"Recent reports that the President called for an increase in the USA nuclear arsenal are absolutely false". Rubio asks Army to kick out West Point grad MORE called the president a "moron", and that Trump suggested increasing the nation's nuclear arsenal.

During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Mr Trump declared that the USA would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.

The Federal Communications Commission issues broadcasting licenses in the U.S. largely to ensure stations don't trip over each other when transmitting. Trump said he wanted to have that same number now, NBC reported.

While Trump's relationship with the press likely represent a new low among presidents in the modern era, there are parallels.
