Russia's Return to Middle East to Help Resolve Complex Issues - Saudi Official

A terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor.

The following day, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced $15 billion in weapons sales to Riyadh.

The U.S.is also focused on increasing missile defense at home and for allies as tensions heat up in the Pacific and the Middle East, as well as with Russian Federation.

The government in Tehran views the missile capability as an essential precautionary defence against the United States and other adversaries, primarily Gulf Arab states and Israel.

Washington deployed THAAD, which is used to guard against ballistic-missile attacks, to South Korea this year for defense against North Korea.

Its recent deployment by the US military in South Korea to protect against any North Korean strike drew protests from Beijing, who feared its sensors would be able to penetrate into Chinese air space and upset the balance of power.

That has drawn fierce criticism from China, which says the system's powerful radar can probe deep into its territory.

"We confirm that an agreement was reached with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the supplies of S-400 air defense systems, Kornet-EM anti-tank guided missiles, TOS-1A systems, AGS-30 automatic grenade launchers and AK-103 Kalashnikov rifles", the press service of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation told TASS on Monday.

USA military sales to Saudi Arabia has come under increased scrutiny as a Saudi-led coalition is involved in military intervention in Yemen.

Riyadh says the coalition is fighting terrorists and supporting Yemen's legitimate government but the office of the United Nations human rights chief has said Saudi-led air strikes cause the majority of civilian casualties.
