Dianne Feinstein running for reelection next year in face of liberal angst

Dianne Feinstein running for reelection next year in face of liberal angst

The oldest serving senator, Dianne Feinstein, says she will run for re-election. "But there's still so much work left to do, from ending gun violence, to combating climate change, to ensuring proper and affordable access to healthcare, and to giving DREAMers the chance to stay in the United States". But in an era of all-out ideological resistance to the Trump presidency, she has drawn fire from progressives for some of her more moderate stances.

The announcement was first tweeted by an unverified Twitter account affiliated with Feinstin.

Most elected Democrats are expected to support Feinstein, but at least one Democratic lawmaker from California has harshly denounced her.

But Feinstein's vulnerabilities extend beyond her left flank to include generational ones. "Safe Democratic seats are the place we should be representing core Democratic values".

Rep. Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in Congress, told Jeff Stein of Vox that Feinstein "is out of touch with the grassroots of our party on economic policy and foreign policy".

"Regulations aren't going to do it", she said in the interview which airs Sunday morning.

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., who replaced Boxer after she retired previous year, was the first new senator from California in almost a quarter of a century. The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, has said he's open to legislation and that he'd spoken with Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley, who was interested in holding a hearing.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Garcetti wrote, "In this topsy-turvy world of the Trump administration, we need her seniority and her experience now, more than ever", in an invitation to the fundraiser, which he is co-hosting with his wife, Amy Wakeland.

With Feinstein in, the question becomes whether anyone else challenges her, the likeliest being de León, who is termed out of the state Senate and has questioned her calls for patience with President Donald Trump.
