Japanese Grand Prix To Be Jolyon Palmer's Last Renault F1 Race

Japanese Grand Prix To Be Jolyon Palmer's Last Renault F1 Race

Jolyon Palmer finished the Japanese Grand Prix in 12th place, in what he has described as a "strange" final weekend with Renault in Formula 1.

"The Japanese Grand Prix will be my last race for Renault", Palmer said.

Knowing he had a twenty-place grid penalty coming into the session, Carlos Sainz Jr. used the qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix as an extended test session, which ended with the slowest time in the second segment.

Jolyon Palmer has said goodbye to Renault F1 after three years with a classy statement released on the French F1 team's Twitter page.

Asked when the news would sink in, he replied: "I don't know, I focused on the race on the plane back home it'll probably sink in that I'm not with Renault and maybe not F1 again".

As a result of the switch, Toro Rosso have confirmed that Daniil Kvyat will be brought back in alongside Pierre Gasly for the USA race.

"It's a shame for me not to finish the season having been with the team a while, but I respect the decision and I wish the team all the best for the future and Carlos the best".

Gasly and Kvyat are now likely to form Toro Rosso's 2018 driver line-up, although Pascal Wehrlein is considered an outside contender.

"We look forward to beating him on track".

Renault chief Abiteboul said that bringing in Sainz four races early would assist the team in getting a "jump start" on its 2018 preparations. "I've been with the team now for three years so it's a shame not to be going to Austin with them".

Regarding his race through the field, Palmer stated; "From 18th on the grid, I think finishing 12th is about as good as we could of done, apart from if we didn't have the VSC at the end [deployed for Lance Stroll's stricken Williams] and had one more lap". Heavy rain saw the start delayed and the teams working on their pit lane river rafts rather than the cars.

"The driver I am today, compared to the driver I was in 2015, is a more complete and better one, and this is thanks to Toro Rosso, who are a great group of professionals".
