Chicago Marathon sees first American victor in 15 years

As he came down the home straight Rupp looked strong and composed to clinch the win in 2:09:20, taking over 38 seconds off his personal best.

The Chicago Marathon is a long-standing tradition in the IL city where runners across the United States and the world gather to run through 29 neighborhoods and reach the finish line in Grant Park.

Rupp, whose father is from Maywood, pulled away from a pack that included defending champion Abel Kirui in the 23d mile.

"It's just incredible", Rupp said. Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba earned the victory in 2:18:31.

Hasay, who trains with Rupp under Alberto Salazar, was third in the Boston Marathon to give the US its best combined male-female finish since 1985.

The men's race started very slow with American Aaron Braun, whose PR was 2:12:54, leading through mile 9.

"I really wanted to wait", Rupp said.

Kenya's Dennis Kimetto, world record holder from his 2014 Berlin Marathon triumph in 2:02:57 and the 2013 Chicago champion, led at the halfway mark in 1:05:49 but began limping soon after and by 25km was off the pace for good. He finished second in April's Boston Marathon. The last American-born runner to win the men's race was Greg Meyer in 1982. "You train so hard to have a race like this and to have it all come together, words just can't describe the feeling when I came across the line". Her sub-2:21 clocking is a course record for Americans. Only Deena Kastor's 2:19:36 at the 2006 London Marathon is the fastest marathon by an American woman.

The Ethiopian had set her sights on the course record of 2:17:18 and although that proved to be beyond her, Dibaba eased to victory nearly two minutes ahead of Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, while home favourite Jordan Hasay was third.
