Google Home Mini hands-on: Smaller, cheaper, subtler

The Google Home Mini and Home Max are two of the first products that are announced at the Google Pixel 2 special launch event.

It has the same fabric-finish like the Google Home Mini. This step will allow you to do multi-step routines and also trigger the device with phrases like "good morning".

Popular music producer Diplo shows off his experience with the Google Home Max. This sits £80/$80 lower than the regular Google Home and is competitively priced, as the latest Amazon Echo Dot costs £50/$50, too. Google is throwing in a free 12-month subscription to YouTube Red for everyone picking up the Google Home Max.

The hockey puck-like Google Home Mini comes in three colours: chalk, charcoal and coral. Voice Match is rolling out to markets and will be made available from the box on the new Google Home devices.

Google took the wraps off a new high-end smart speaker on Wednesday, a $400 device aimed at audiophiles that turns up the heat in the competition with Apple, Amazon and Sonos.

You can then ask it all many of questions, commands and more, from controlling various smart home devices such as lighting, Chromecast and thermostats to playing games, getting the news and weather and finding out the answers to question.

Google Home now has a premium big brother. The Max can accept input as a Google Cast target, over Bluetooth, or by using the 3.5-mm auxilliary input.

The Home Mini is the ideal rival to the Echo Dot, and if you're firmly in the Google rather than Amazon camp, it's a great device to kick off your smart home, or build on what you have already.

It's available for pre-order right away, and available in seven countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK and United States, including Japan - the new country that was announced at the Google event.

The new speaker, which goes on sale in December, is called Google Max. The standard Google Home speaker costs nearly US$130. Now, Google Home multi-user support is now rolling out to all countries on which the Home is being sold in. It'll also fit in nicely with any other Home devices you have your environment, meaning multiroom audio potential.
