Facebook Messenger Lite launches in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland

But while some users get some good mileage out of additions to Messenger, others find the upgrades to be mere fluff.

Facebook Messenger Lite is created to use a lot less data than the standard version of Messenger. It originally launched in five countries, Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela, in October 2016.

By definition, the app doesn't plan to introduce an iOS version as the main objective of creating a lite version was to target mid-range to entry-level Android devices, according to TechCrunch.

Facebook's data-saving Messenger Lite alternative was so far available for users in developing countries.

You won't be able to video chat through Messenger Lite while the chat heads feature that pops up over the top of other apps won't happen when using this version either. The app has its own personal assistant, and now every time you open it you're also hit in the face with all your friend's Stories.

Facebook Messenger Lite is a standalone, slimmed down version of the original Messenger app that offers core features of Messenger for places with slower than average Internet speeds.

One of the main reasons cited by Facebook to introduce Messenger Lite was that there are over a billion people who still don't have access to high speed 3G or 4G network. The app is under 10MB in size, and in use it should eat through less data than its non-Lite big brother.

Still this is a good thing, because people have to deal with data limits in developed countries as well. People seem to enjoy its simple nature and data-friendly approach, even if they do have high-end smartphones.

Sadly the app is only for Android at the moment (you can download it from the Google Play Store for free) and according to TechCrunch there are no plans to make an iOS version in the future.
