OJ Simpson released from prison

OJ Simpson released from prison

Simpson was cleared in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and a friend, Ron Goldman following his sensational, 13-month trial in Los Angeles.

Simpson was granted parole July 20 after the disgraced football star expressed regret for his actions, which he said occurred after having a few drinks and misjudging the situation.

The 70-year old shot to stardom as one of the NFL's all-time greats, before turning his hand to acting.

State Department of Corrections public inmate records provided no information about Simpson's custody status or location, which prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast said usually indicates that an inmate is being moved in custody.

He becomes eligible for release Sunday, but LaVergne said he doesn't know where or when it will happen.

Simpson was assessed $33.5 million after a civil court found him liable for the killings, according to the AP.

In a strongly worded letter, Attorney General Pam Bondi has asked that O.J. Simpson not be relocated to Florida once he is released on parole. However, Ritter noted that Simpson's "five years of parole supervision could be reduced with credits for good behavior".

Photographs released by Ms Keast showed Simpson, seated at a table, signing the documents as others watched. He said the family will continue to pursue him for the payment.

Simpson was sentenced to a maximum 33-year prison sentence after storming a hotel room in an attempt to seize items from two sports memorabilia dealers.

Simpson's lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, once told ABC News, "He wants to go to Florida, he wants to see his family and hug his family on the outside of prison ..."

Bondi ended her letter saying the state "should not become a country club for this convicted criminal".

Florida corrections officials have said in the past that they must accept the transfer if Nevada's request meets the established criteria. She said he was released overnight to avoid media attention.

The jury also awarded Brown and Simpson's two children US$12.6m from their father as recipients of their mother's estate.
