Mark Lawrenson offers damning verdict of Newcastle in prediction v Liverpool

The former Liverpool striker says that he will always have "fond memories of Rafa Benitez", somebody who he describes as a "great manager". However, they have so far taken nine points from their opening six games, which sees them sitting five points above the relegation zone.

After spells at Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, Benitez was brought in to save Newcastle from relegation in March past year. However, the Magpies are undefeated in the previous three encounters with Liverpool at home, winning two along with one draw.

Out of the blue, Benitez rang the then 29 year old and gave him the chance to go back to Liverpool, something which the forward describes as "the best phone call I've ever had in my life". "But that is football, you never know", Benitez told reporters on Friday.

"I trust the team to be competitive and to be close to the top four or in it - that's where we are at the moment", he said. It is quite hard because I have been in Italy, or Madrid, or moving around.

"I have been in Italy or Madrid or moving around". It hasn't come at the right time.

"The reality is that because they are so offensive, they have sometimes problems in defense", Benitez said in his pre-match press conference.

"I don't want to say (I will go back)".

"I know he's still really connected to the club", replied Klopp on Friday. I am happy here, I want to do well here and I wish Jurgen Klopp a lot of success.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reacted to criticism of his team's form.

"But in the future... If you see the money we spent, and the money they've spent in the past years, the fans appreciate that".

The roller-coaster fortunes of Newcastle United continues to baffle and amaze onlookers as a season in which they were supposed to struggle and prove themselves out off their depth has had a very different beginning.

However, despite their Champions League frustrations, they did win their last league game and will be hoping to make it two in a row with a victory over the Magpies.

It was a combination of good saves from Aleksandr Selikhove and some wasteful finishing which left Liverpool with a solitary point, as each of the Liverpool players had good chances to rescue the win for their team but found their efforts thwarted for varying reasons.
