NFL Ratings Down Nationally in Wake of Protests, But Up Locally

NFL Ratings Down Nationally in Wake of Protests, But Up Locally

Following President Donald Trump's aggressive comments Friday night during a rally about those who chose to "disrespect the flag", more NFL players than ever protested the national anthem on Sunday before their games.

For whatever reasons people choose to attribute to the NFL's ratings stumble, now more than a year old and something that will surely continue this season, it is not a problem that can really be diagnosed over a single weekend - let alone one game. As a former-some might say current-television personality, Trump knows that falling ratings lead to a decline in advertising revenue for companies like CBS, NBC and Fox, the NFL's major national television broadcasters.

When considering just the Sunday games, ratings were down from past year.

Week 3's average rating/share was 11.9/25. "Bad ratings!" Trump tweeted on September 24.

Overall, the Redskins 27-10 victory was down 9 percent compared to last week's matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons, and 11 percent when compared to last year's Week 3 Sunday night game on NBC.

Snagging a 9.3 metered-market result and the best ratings of the season so far, last night's MNF was a thankful ratings touchdown for a league that has been losing ground in that metric so far this season and all of previous year.

The coming week only sees the football ratings grab get more aggressive.

The President telling those who attended a rally on Friday in Huntsville, AL that those National Football League players who kneeled in protest to the treatment of African-Americans should be fired. The NFL Today on CBS scored its highest rating since 2010, the newspaper reported, but viewership of the live games themselves still depended on the quality of the action and the teams involved.

Overnight ratings can give a glimpse of which way viewership is going, but don't always tell the whole story.

Trump even went so far as to try to persuade National Football League fans to 'refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country'.

Sure, the Dallas Cowboys schooled the host Arizona Cardinals 28-17 on ESPN's Monday Night Football last night.

Only six players protested during the anthem in Week 2, but after Trump's criticism over the weekend, around 200 players took part on Sunday.
