Violent crime rates up for 2nd consecutive year

The governor's office said that reported violent crime in CT has declined an overall 20 percent since 2011, though there was a slight increase of 2.6 percent between 2015 to 2016.

A total of 17,250 Americans were murdered last year, marking an increase of 8.6 percent from the year before. The number of murders in those large cities also soared, by the largest degree between population centers, increasing 20.3% from 2015 to 2016.

In Michigan the stats show an increase in violent crimes of just over 9 percent to more than 45,000 violent crimes a year ago.

New FBI statistics show MI had an increase in violent crime more than double the national average.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions warned of a trend in his statement accompanying the report.

The Brennan Center for Justice, a New York-based law and policy institute, said Monday that the murder rate increase was fueled by an uptick in killings in some of the country's largest cities - with Chicago accounting for more than a fifth of the nationwide murder increase previous year.

President Trump frequently cited the threat of violent crime, even though those rates have tumbled in recent years, while on the campaign trail.

"False narratives about a national crime wave will not help". "Crime remains near historic lows, with an uptick in murder and violence driven in part by problems in some of our nation's largest cities".

In each of the specific crime categories - both for property and violent crimes, the total number of offenses reported declined, with two exceptions: robberies and burglaries.

Kapustin says the homicide spike wasn't a phenomenon affecting "every single square inch of Chicago", noting homicides have disproportionately occurred in specific areas - typically the economically poor neighborhoods on the South and West Sides of the city.

"Five neighborhoods in Chicago explain ten percent of the national increase in homicide rates".

Homicides went up a year ago in more than three dozen of the country's biggest cities or counties, according to data collected by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, the group of law enforcement leaders.

Since the early 1990s, as the United States population has grown, murders have dropped to about 14,000 a year. A few thousand law enforcement jurisdictions do not report their data to federal authorities each year. In 2015, 484 violent crimes were recorded while 538 violent crimes were noted in the report for 2016.

Those figures are then transferred automatically to the state police Michigan Incident Crime Reporting database, and from there to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting system.

The number of reported aggravated assaults fell by 58, from 1,031 to 973.
