Apple only allows streaming, not download, of upgraded 4K movies

Netflix has confirmed that Apple's latest smartphones, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X will be able to stream Netflix content in HDR and Dolby Vision. Both are even ahead of Apple TV in being able to stream Amazon video now; it's coming soon to Apple TV.

While the new 48-hour rental period is available in the USA, we've reached out to Apple to see if it will be the same in other countries and regions that support iTunes movie rentals and will update this post when we hear back.

"Yes, the $179 Apple TV 4K finally delivers gorgeous high fidelity video, but as usual, you're paying a premium for convenience and ease-of-use", Eadicicco wrote for TIME, Fortune's sister publication.

Watching a downloaded version of a 4K movie or viewing it on a slow Wi-Fi connection will produce an HD version - but not one in 4K. Eadicicco was also impressed by the device's "easy setup", but cautioned that the Apple TV 4K is expensive.

Apple has extended the period of time that customers have to finish (or rewatch) a rented movie to 48 hours. Apple has quietly switched up its policy on how long rented content can be watched after you've started playback, much to the benefit of iTunes users. HD movies from iTunes are upgraded to 4K HDR at no additional cost.

Apple succeeds in its main objective with this upgrade: 4K content looks great, on a 4K television set.

Netflix has now added HDR support for Apple's iPhone X and iPad Pro. "An "Apple person" with a nice TV and a yen for improved image quality". The new Apple TV 4K comes in 32GB and 64GB storage configurations.

HD videos feature a higher-quality picture than SD videos.

The Apple TV 4K is available at Apple.ca, Best Buy, and Walmart. However, those who purchase the new set-top box will be limited in how they can enjoy 4K titles. The clock starts when you begin watching rented content; you still have 30 days to hit the play button.
