1 shot, shooter arrested at Mattoon High School

Police responded before noon Wednesday for reports of shots fired and a person shot.

By the time police were able to reach the high school the shooter was already subdued and a school resource officer was already on site.

Police say this is still an active scene, but believe there was only one suspect.

The victim is reportedly in a stable condition in hospital.

Mattoon, a town of approximately 18,000 people, is about 180 miles south of Chicago.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reported that police were clearing the high school room by room.

School officials say as a precaution all buildings are on a soft lockdown.

All students are being bussed to Riddle School, where parents may pick them up. More information will be forthcoming when more information is available.
