US Considering Shooting Down Any Missiles From North Korea, Reports Claim

Trump asked Moon "how Rocket Man is doing" - as the US president put it in a Sunday morning tweet - and took note of the "long gas lines forming in North Korea", presumably as a result of the stricter sanctions recently implemented.

The 15-nation council condemned Friday's missile test in an emergency session and called on all countries to "fully, comprehensively and immediately" implement all U.N. sanctions.

Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday declared the rocket's combat power and reliability have been proved through tests and that the weapon is now ready for full deployment. Mattis acknowledged discussing that with his South Korean counterpart but declined to say whether that option was under consideration.

South Korea says the USA military has flown powerful bombers and stealth jets over the Korean Peninsula in joint drills with South Korean warplanes.

The regime wanted to display its displeasure at the latest round of United Nations sanctions, which were imposed following North Korea's sixth nuclear test on 3 September, its most powerful to date.

The Defense Ministry deployed Patriot Advanced Capability-3, or PAC-3, missile interceptors in the city of Hakodate, Hokkaido, on Tuesday after North Korea recently fired two missiles over the southern part of the northernmost prefecture.

The United States often sends powerful military aircraft in a show of force in times of heightened animosities with North Korea.

In remarks to reporters at the Pentagon, Mattis said US and Japanese missile defenses have been ready to respond, but were not needed.

The US military has tens of thousands of combat forces based in Japan and South Korea. "And that if General Kelly wants to, like, work on saving this country from the frailties of this president's ability to process information and handle it like an adult, and not lead us either marching into war or cause some sort of unrest, he needs to take his phone away from him".

The US ambassador to the UN warned North Korea will be destroyed if it continues its "reckless behavior" and forces the United States and its allies to defend themselves against any attack.

Trump, in a tweet, asserted that long lines for gas were forming in North Korea, and he said that was "too bad".

If diplomacy fails to coerce North Korea to the negotiating table, he said, "our military option will be the only one left".

North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile on August 29 and another on Friday.

Another problem is that Chinese and Americans who see each other as their main security threat both see North Korea as, if not a physical buffer, at least a useful trap, hindrance or distraction for their rival, in a zero-sum game.
